Daradia: The Pain Clinic – A Journey in Specialized Pain Care

Daradia: The Pain Clinic represents one of the early efforts in India to build a dedicated, specialty-focused center for pain management at a time when structured pain clinics were rare.
Established in 2008 in Kolkata, Daradia has grown steadily over the years as a clinical, academic, and training center committed exclusively to the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic pain.
Before Dedicated Pain Clinics Were Common (Mid-1990s – 2008)
In the mid-1990s, pain medicine in India was still in a developmental stage. Most patients with chronic pain were managed within general departments, and structured interventional pain services were limited.
During this period:
- Specialized pain practice began within hospital settings
- Image-guided pain interventions were gradually introduced
- Multidisciplinary pain management concepts started gaining recognition
The clinical experience accumulated during these early years highlighted a clear need for a stand-alone center focused entirely on pain medicine, combining diagnosis, interventional procedures, rehabilitation, and long-term follow-up under one roof.
After more than a decade of exclusive pain practice in hospitals, the idea of establishing a dedicated pain clinic took shape.
The foundation of Daradia was shaped by long-standing clinical work in pain medicine. Dr. Gautam Das began focused pain practice in the mid-1990s, at a time when pain medicine was still emerging as a specialty in India. After more than a decade of exclusive clinical experience managing complex pain conditions across hospital settings, the decision was taken to establish a dedicated, stand-alone pain clinic. This experience-driven approach led to the formal launch of Daradia: The Pain Clinic in 2008, built on a practical understanding of long-term pain care, interventional techniques, and multidisciplinary management.
Establishment of Daradia (2008)

Daradia: The Pain Clinic was formally inaugurated on:
27 September 2008
Location: Ultadanga, Kolkata
Inaugurated by: The then Commissioner of Police, Kolkata
At that time, very few independent pain clinics existed in the country. Daradia was created with the vision of providing:
- Structured pain diagnosis
- Evidence-based treatment planning
- Interventional pain procedures
- Long-term care for chronic pain patients
- Ethical and patient-centered pain management
From the beginning, the clinic focused exclusively on pain medicine rather than functioning as a general outpatient facility.
Years of Clinical Growth (2008–2018)
Over the next decade, Daradia gradually expanded its scope and infrastructure:
- Increasing patient referrals for complex chronic pain
- Introduction of ultrasound-guided and fluoroscopy-guided interventions
- Management of cancer pain and neuropathic pain conditions
- Development of standardized clinical protocols
- Early involvement in physician training and workshops
As patient volume and academic activities increased, the need for a larger and more specialized facility became evident.

Relocation to New Town, Kolkata (2018)

In 2018, Daradia moved to its present location in New Town, Kolkata, allowing the clinic to further strengthen its services through:
- Dedicated procedure rooms
- Advanced musculoskeletal ultrasound facilities
- Teaching and training infrastructure
- Space for academic meetings and workshops
- Integration of online education programs
This transition marked a new phase in the clinic’s development—from a single-location pain practice to a structured center combining clinical care, education, and research.
Daradia Today
Today, Daradia functions as:
- A specialized center for chronic pain management
- A referral clinic for complex pain conditions
- A training hub for physicians from India and abroad
- A contributor to academic research and pain education
While many pain clinics in India are relatively new, Daradia has remained continuously active for more than 17 years as a dedicated pain clinic, supported by clinical experience that extends back to the mid-1990s.
Philosophy of Care
Daradia was built on a few consistent principles:
- Pain is a disease in itself, not just a symptom
- Accurate diagnosis precedes intervention
- Safety and anatomy-based techniques are essential
- Treatment must be individualized
- Long-term outcomes matter more than short-term relief
These principles continue to guide clinical practice and training programs at the center.
