ICRAPAIN 2026: When Kolkata Became a Global Classroom for Pain Medicine
More than a conference, the 10th International Conference on Recent Advances in Pain became a meeting point for evidence, experience, innovation and hands-on learning in modern pain medicine.
From 4–6 September 2026, Kolkata welcomed pain physicians, researchers, educators and healthcare professionals for the 10th International Conference on Recent Advances in Pain – ICRAPAIN 2026, organised by Daradia: The Pain Clinic and Daradia Pain Foundation.
The theme for this landmark edition was:
“From Evidence to Practice: Shaping the Future of Pain Medicine.”
And that theme was visible throughout the meeting.
With 600+ participants, a large international faculty, multiple scientific halls, practical workshops, research presentations, masterclasses and discussions extending from established techniques to emerging areas of pain medicine, ICRAPAIN 2026 became the largest edition of the conference so far.
But numbers alone do not describe what made this edition special.
Bringing Evidence Closer to Everyday Pain Practice
One of the central ideas behind ICRAPAIN has always been simple: scientific knowledge becomes valuable only when it improves clinical decision-making and ultimately improves patient care.
The 2026 scientific programme therefore moved beyond conventional lecture-based learning.
Sessions explored contemporary topics including:
- Pain biologics and regenerative medicine
- Musculoskeletal ultrasound
- Fluoroscopy-guided interventions
- Radiofrequency procedures
- Cryoneurolysis
- Neuromodulation
- Spine and musculoskeletal pain
- Cancer pain
- Neuropathic and nociplastic pain
- Pharmacotherapy and opioid stewardship
- Artificial intelligence in pain medicine
- Research methodology and scientific publication
Clinical reasoning remained central throughout the programme. Speakers were encouraged not merely to demonstrate how an intervention is performed, but also to discuss why, when and in whom it should be considered.
That distinction is increasingly important as pain medicine evolves from procedure-oriented practice towards precision, mechanism-based and evidence-informed care.
Hands-On Learning Remained at the Heart of ICRAPAIN
Pain medicine is a specialty where theoretical knowledge must ultimately translate into anatomical understanding, imaging skills, clinical examination and procedural accuracy.
For this reason, practical education remained one of the strongest components of ICRAPAIN 2026.
Pre-conference and post-conference activities included training in C-arm-guided interventions, pain biologics and ultrasound-guided procedures.
During the main conference, focused masterclasses allowed participants to explore different anatomical regions and clinical problems in greater depth.
These sessions created an important bridge between the auditorium and clinical practice: participants could discuss anatomy, indications, imaging, needle approaches, safety and clinical application with experienced faculty.
For younger pain physicians and trainees in particular, this combination of scientific discussion and practical exposure created a learning environment very different from a conventional medical conference.
Research Was Not a Side Event
A conference grows academically when delegates stop being passive listeners and begin contributing their own questions, observations and research.
ICRAPAIN 2026 saw 52 scientific abstracts, including 42 submissions from delegates and 10 from faculty.
Podium and poster presentations provided young researchers with opportunities to present their work, defend their methodology, receive feedback and interact with experienced academicians.
This culture of participation is important for the future of pain medicine.
Clinical practice generates questions. Those questions should lead to research, research should generate evidence, and evidence should return to clinical practice.
ICRAPAIN aims to strengthen that cycle.
Innovation Had Its Own Platform
One of the more unusual components of ICRAPAIN 2026 was the ICRA-PAIN Shark Tank.
Doctors, fellows, researchers and healthcare innovators were invited to present ideas that could potentially improve pain care, increase accessibility, reduce cost, improve training or solve practical problems within healthcare delivery.
Importantly, participants did not necessarily need an established company or finished product. Ideas at the concept, prototype or implementation stage could be discussed.
This reflected an important philosophy: the future of pain medicine will not be shaped only by new injections or devices. Innovation may also come through better education, digital tools, clinical workflows, research systems and new models of healthcare delivery.
Learning That Continued Beyond the Conference Hall
Daradia has always believed that a conference should leave participants with more than a certificate and photographs.
At ICRAPAIN 2026, two practical academic books were prepared as part of this educational initiative:
Daradia Handbook of Essential Drugs in Pain Practice
and
Handbook of Pain Biologics – Regenerative Therapy in Pain Practice
The objective was to provide clinicians with concise resources that could continue to be useful after the conference was over.
This philosophy—creating educational material that remains relevant in everyday clinical practice—reflects the broader academic mission behind ICRAPAIN.
What Participating Faculty Said
Perhaps one of the most meaningful indicators of a scientific meeting is what participants themselves say after returning home.
Several faculty members shared their experiences publicly following ICRAPAIN 2026.
Dr. Neha Kanojia described the conference as a valuable platform for academic exchange, learning and interaction among pain physicians, while appreciating the organisation and hospitality.
Dr. Ramesh Vairamuthu, who participated in the Wrist Ultrasound Masterclass, described the meeting as a memorable academic experience with opportunities to share knowledge, learn from experts and gain insights into advanced musculoskeletal ultrasound and pain interventions.
Other participating faculty highlighted the collaborative atmosphere, international scientific exchange and the opportunity to connect evidence with everyday clinical practice.
Such feedback is particularly meaningful because the strength of an academic meeting ultimately depends on the experience of those who teach, learn and participate in it.
The Numbers Behind the Feedback
Following the conference, feedback was collected from delegates.
Among 81 respondents, the reported average scores were:
Overall Conference – 9.22/10
Scientific Programme – 9.22/10
Live Biologics Workshop – 9.63/10
C-arm Workshop – 9.46/10
Ultrasound Workshop – 9.22/10
Perhaps even more encouraging, 75% of respondents expressed interest in attending ICRAPAIN 2027.
The qualitative comments repeatedly appreciated the academics, faculty, practical learning, teamwork and hospitality.
At the same time, participants also suggested areas for improvement, including workshop rotations, time management, navigation between scientific halls, availability of printed programmes and accommodation coordination.
These suggestions matter.
The objective for ICRAPAIN is not simply to become larger every year. The objective is to become more academic, more organised, more practical and more useful to every participant.
More Than 600 Participants, Yet Still a Community
Large conferences can sometimes become impersonal.
One of the encouraging aspects of ICRAPAIN 2026 was that despite crossing the 600-participant milestone, social interaction remained an important part of the meeting.
Faculty members, established specialists, young pain physicians, fellows and researchers interacted across formal lectures, workshops, masterclasses and informal discussions.
For an evolving specialty such as pain medicine, these professional relationships are important.
Collaboration between institutions and countries can lead to joint research, exchange of expertise, improved training opportunities and ultimately better standards of patient care.
Ten Editions—and the Journey Continues
Reaching the 10th edition of ICRAPAIN represents more than a numerical milestone for Daradia.
What began as an effort to create a strong academic platform for pain physicians has gradually developed into an international meeting centred around education, evidence, procedural skills, research, innovation and professional collaboration.
ICRAPAIN 2026 demonstrated how much the pain medicine community has grown—and also how much more remains to be explored.
Questions remain around patient selection, biologics, neuromodulation, nociplastic pain, imaging, artificial intelligence, precision interventions and the long-term evidence behind many emerging treatments.
Those unanswered questions are exactly why scientific meetings remain important.
Pain Biologics, Ciplostem and the Evolving Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis
One area that generated considerable scientific interest during ICRAPAIN 2026 was Pain Biologics and the non-surgical treatment of knee osteoarthritis.
Scientific lectures discussed the evolving evidence around regenerative therapies including Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) and mesenchymal stromal cell therapies, with particular emphasis on appropriate patient selection, evidence and realistic clinical expectations.
Among the therapies discussed was Ciplostem, an allogeneic mesenchymal stromal cell therapy developed by Stempeutics Research and marketed in India by Cipla. Ciplostem has received approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) for the treatment of selected patients with Grade II and Grade III knee osteoarthritis.
The scientific discussions went beyond individual products and explored a broader question increasingly relevant to pain physicians and patients: how far can modern non-surgical treatment of knee osteoarthritis contribute to joint preservation and potentially delay the need for knee replacement?
Faculty discussed the importance of looking beyond radiological grading alone and considering pain, function, deformity, mechanical alignment, instability, disease phenotype and patient preference while planning treatment. There was also academic discussion around whether selected patients with more advanced osteoarthritis but relatively limited deformity might sometimes be considered for a structured joint-preservation strategy before proceeding directly to knee replacement surgery.
The conference discussion should not be interpreted as establishing biologic therapy as a substitute for knee replacement in advanced osteoarthritis. Rather, it reflected the growing interest in more individualised and phenotype-based management of knee OA.
Before the main conference, the pre-conference Live Pain Biologics Workshop provided practical exposure to regenerative interventions. A live Ciplostem procedure was demonstrated as part of the workshop, giving participating physicians an opportunity to discuss patient selection, clinical technique, safety, evidence and the practical application of allogeneic MSC therapy.
The strong interest in these sessions reflected a broader trend within pain medicine: regenerative therapy is moving from being discussed simply as an emerging intervention toward being examined more critically through the lenses of evidence, patient selection and responsible clinical practice.
Looking Towards ICRAPAIN 2027
Planning has already begun for the next chapter.
Pain Biologics has been announced as the central theme for ICRAPAIN 2027, with a strong emphasis expected on the science of regeneration, evidence, patient selection, image-guided application and responsible clinical translation.
As always, however, the goal will extend beyond a single technique or technology.
The larger mission remains unchanged:
to bring clinicians, teachers, researchers and innovators together so that better knowledge can ultimately translate into better pain care.
To every faculty member, delegate, researcher, fellow, volunteer, academic collaborator, industry partner and member of the organising team who contributed to ICRAPAIN 2026—thank you for making the 10th edition memorable.
The conference may have ended.
The learning, collaborations and conversations it created have only begun.
See you at ICRAPAIN 2027.
