What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic painful condition and about 4% of general population is affected.

How does a fibromyalgia patient present?

These patients present with pain all over the body from head to toes. Most commonly they have back pain, neck pain, headache, hand pain, and leg pains. They can also present with joint pain, but joint swellings and deformities are absent. They may have pain many other symptoms other than pain.

What are the other symptoms other than pain?

There are number of symptoms other than pain. These are disturbances in sleep, difficulties in remembering, fatigueability and some somatic symtoms. Common somatic symptoms are dryness of mouth, dryness of eyes, mouth ulcers, respiratory distress, addominal cramps, burning micturations, irritable bowels etc.

What are the treatments of fibromyalgia?

Treatment of fibromyalgia consists of understanding that fibromyalgia is not a serious disease, graded aerobic exercises like walking, and some medicines which are approved by US FDA for management of fibromyalgia like pregabalin, milnacipran and duloxetin.
